Daehan Shipbuilding Obtain approval Ammonia Ready Basic Certification (AIP)

In August this year, the company acquired ammonia-ready AIP for the 115K oil product carrier (LR2PC) and HN5065 (Neda).

The term 'Ammonia Ready' means a ship that reflects the hull structure, fuel tank specifications, hazard evaluation so that ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel fuel can be converted to ammonia fuel propulsion ships.

Ammonia is attracting attention as a ship fuel suitable for the era of low-carbon and decarbonization because it doesn’t emit carbon dioxide when it burns, and it can be supplied stably and stored easily, transported, and handed. The company has promoted the development of ammonia-ready to meet increasing environmental regulations.

Currently, IMO limits the sulfate content of ship fuel oil to less than 0.5 percent. In response, the company has been building ships that use low sulfur oil and ships with sulfuric acid reduction devices (scrubbers) and recently received orders for LNG propulsion ships.

However, the IMO announced that it will strengthen regulations by reducing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases by 70 percent and 50 percent respectively from 2050, making it difficult to cope with the new regulations with LNG propulsion ships. The company has been developing ammonia fuel propulsion ships that can reduce carbon emissions in response to these regulations.

Since February this year, the company has been learning-related technology and drawing up basic designs for ammonia fuel propulsion ships at the request of Neda, the owner of HN5065. After that, they reflect risk assessment in the design in cooperation with the shipowner company and ABS and obtained AIP from ABS in August this year.

Regarding the acquisition of the AIP, Yoo Geum-Il, head of the piping design department, said, "As ammonia fuel propulsion ships are still in the development stage around the world, the company is considered that does preemptive response. The acquisition of AIP proves that the company has the same technological level as the three major shipbuilders in Korea." he said proudly.
