Daehan Shipbuilding, mid-sized shipbuilding based in Haenam-gun, recently launched its 100th ship. Although business conditions are still not easy due to Corona19 and low oil prices, the good news of ship orders and launching has continued since the beginning of the year, and the regional economic outlook is also gaining momentum.

This is the Chosun Haenam Shipyard in Hwan-myeon, Haenam-gun. A 250-meter-long, 44-meter-wide oil tanker stands tall on the eighth floor of an apartment building. A crude oil tanker ordered from a Greek shipping company in April 2019, it recently completed its first land process and launched its hull at sea. In April of this year, when it is handed over to the ship's owner, it will travel around the ocean and transport crude oil from the offshore oil fields.

Nicolaos Stamdis Minerva Marine* (Daehan Shipbuilding) has excellent expertise and a high level of technology has been introduced. They will continue to develop. With this launch, Daehan Shipbuilding also built its 100th launch which is a landmark achievement for the first time in 12 years since launching its first ship in 2008. Due to the sharp decline in orders for large oil tankers and the global recession caused by Corona19, the Korean shipbuilding industry was directly hit. But, Daehan Ship Building has a strategy to focus on receiving orders for medium-sized oil tankers that have short construction time and good profitability. Thus Daehan Ship Building was securing a stable balance of orders.

In the end, the method of overcoming this difficult situation promotes a high value-added strategy for environmentally friendly vessels and introduces technology to competitive vessels. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, another major shipbuilder in the region, also received orders for container ships worth 300 billion won and LNG ship projects worth 200 billion won early this month. As the shipbuilding industry, which accounts for more than half of the value-added production of manufacturing industries in South Jeolla-do, has been receiving good news since the beginning of this year, regional economies are also paying attention to whether a signal of rebound.
